On This Day In 1944 Government Seizes Store Giant Montgomery Ward

On this day in 1944, the federal government seizes Montgomery Ward, acting on President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's orders. It was the second time that the government seized the company during 1944.

The use of federal power was brazen, to say the least! But FDR had spent his entire presidency expanding the scope of federal power, to the country’s detriment. Perhaps his audacity wasn’t so surprising after all.

During the war... years, FDR reinstituted a WWI-era War Labor Board. The board was supposed to arbitrate labor disputes and prevent slowdowns in the production of materials needed for the war. The goal was to keep union strikes from affecting the war effort.

At Montgomery Ward, none of this went over so well. During the Great Depression, the retailer had struggled to keep up with competitors such as Sears. In order to save his company, CEO Sewell Avery took many cost-cutting actions: He saved the company financially, but his actions also led to a series of disputes with the company’s workers. By April 1944, the company’s labor agreements were expiring, which meant the workers could again go on strike. FDR ordered Avery to sign a new contract or to have his company seized. Avery refused, and he was carried out of his company, feet first, by soldiers. (See attached picture.)

The company was returned to Avery’s control in early May, but Avery still refused to accept the Union contract. Matters simmered again for a while, then came to a head in December when Montgomery Ward’s workers went on strike. On December 27, FDR again ordered seizure of the retailer. He told the country: “The Government of the United States cannot and will not tolerate any interference with war production in this critical hour.”

The second time around, Avery was not carried out of the building. He stayed in his office while Major General Joseph Byron used an office nearby. It would be nearly a year before the government would relinquish control of the company back to Avery.

The retail giant was never the same again, partly because Avery became so suspicious of the government that he sat on hordes of cash. Other retailers, such as Sears, were investing in their companies and growing. Avery was not. The free market, finally back at work again, did not reward Avery’s decision. Eventually, as we all know, Montgomery Ward could not stay afloat, and it went out of business in 2000.

Christmas Cards From School Children To Veterans Denied Delivery

So much for the spirit of the season! Students at a school in Texas made Christmas cards for injured vets at a V.A. hospital, however a V.A. official told the school that nothing with "Merry Christmas," "God Bless You" or other religious statements could be given to the vets.

Students at a private elementary school in North Texas made Christmas cards for injured veterans at a local V.A. hospital.

When the cards were set to be delivered, a V.A. official told the teacher who organized the effort that nothing with "Merry Christmas," "God Bless You" or other religious statements could be given to veterans.

"This wasn't the country I grew up in, when you couldn't say ‘Merry Christmas,' you couldn't say ‘God bless you' or reference any scripture," said a mother of one of the students.

The V.A. explained its policy in a statement:

"In order to be respectful of our Veterans religious beliefs, all donated holiday cards are reviewed by a multi-disciplinary team of staff led by Chaplaincy services and determined if they are appropriate (non-religious) to freely distribute to patients. After the review is complete, the holiday cards that reference religious and/or secular tones are then distributed by Chaplaincy Service on a one-on-one basis if the patient agrees to the religious reference in the holiday card donation. The holiday cards that do not contain religious and/or secular tones are distributed freely to patients across the Health Care System. We regret this process was not fully explained to this group and apologize for any misunderstanding."

Police Point Gun, Order Man To The Ground For Legally Carrying His Gun

A Grand Rapids man is suing the city, the police department and three officers, alleging  his right to openly carry a gun was violated when he was ordered to the ground at gunpoint and his weapon was taken.

Johann Deffert claims in the federal lawsuit filed Friday that around noon on March 3, he was walking along a public sidewalk openly carrying a handgun in a holster at his hip. It is legal to openly carry a firearm in Michigan.

GRPD Officer William Moe then approached Deffert, drew his service pistol, pointed it at him and ordered him to the ground, the suit says.

Deffert did as he was told, lying on his stomach while Moe took his gun and handcuffed him. Officers Timothy Johnston and Steven LaBreque then arrived.

Deffert remained handcuffed in the back of police cruiser for about 10 minutes, he said. He said he offered his identification to the officers, but they wouldn't take it. Instead, they "debated public policy" with Deffert for several minutes, the suit alleges.

After confirming through a state database that Deffert was not a felon, was old enough to have a gun and was in an area where the gun was allowed, the officers released him. He was never arrested, nor was he charged with a crime.

The lawsuit says the incident constituted a violation of Deffert's First, Second, Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights, which protect the right to free speech and the right to bear arms, prevents unreasonable searches and seizures, and ensures due process and equal protection, respectively.

The suit alleges the three officers "showed intentional, outrageous, and reckless disregard for Plaintiff's constitutional rights" and that Deffert "suffered physical and emotional injury, loss of freedom, and loss of other constitutionally protected rights."

It says the officers caused Deffert undue fear when a gun was pointed at him and pain when he was forced to the ground and handcuffed, and that the incident left him humiliated.

It claims the officers never had any reason to believe he had committed a crime or had any illegal intention. It also says one reason Deffert was carrying the gun was to raise awareness about Michigan's open carry law.

The suit claims the city failed to properly train the officers on Michigan gun laws, which caused the incident.

Deffert is suing for a $100,000 judgment and another $500,000 for punitive damages, as well as attorney fees.

The End Of A Dynasty? The Family Speaks Out on Phil Robertson Suspension

"We want to thank all of you for your prayers and support. The family has spent much time in prayer since learning of A&E's decision. We want you to know that first and foremost we are a family rooted in our faith in God and our belief that the Bible is His word. While some of Phil’s unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible. Phil is a Godly man ...who follows what the Bible says are the greatest commandments: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart' and 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' Phil would never incite or encourage hate.We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right. We have had a successful working relationship with A&E but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty. Again, thank you for your continued support of our family."

The Agema Controversy: Hero or Homophobe

Agema
Dave Agema
By:  Jack Hoogendyk

You don't have to surf the internet long to see a multitude of stories such as this and this, about a speech delivered recently in Berrien County by Michigan's National Committeeman, Dave Agema. It didn't take long for mainstream Republican leaders, following the lead of some fringe GOP adherents and the far-out-liberal-left to pile on and call for Dave's resignation as Committeeman.

Did the media take Mr. Agema's remarks out of context? Is Dave Agema really "a venomous committee member whose hate speech and fear tactics have become an embarrassment to not only their party, but to everyone in Michigan," as Emily Dievendof, managing director of Equality Michigan described him?

Dennis Lennox

Dennis Lennox, "Republican strategist", " and party delegate made this statement about Dave. "Dave Agema's hateful rhetoric and unabashed bigotry have no place in our Republican Party. Republicans will not win a national governing majority until Mr. Agema's extremist behavior is no longer tolerated."

See Dennis Lennox Defamation Lawsuit: Accused Of Calling A County Commisioner A Homosexual.

Hate speech? Fear tactics? Hateful rhetoric and unabashed bigotry? Was the rank and file Republican Party calling for Dave's scalp? Are they really embarrassed by Dave's comments or are some members of Republican leadership cowering under pressure from the real hate groups like Equality Michigan?

Paul Welday
It may be instructive to hear how the party faithfuls reacted to Dave Agema's speech last weekend at a statewide gathering of GOP delegates and committee members. Here is an account I recently received from David Wells, a delegate who was there:

"The end result of the week long attacks in the press by a tiny force within the GOP who launched an organized attack on Dave Agema, calling for his censure are:
  • Paul Welday retracted any motion for censure of Dave. There is no record or evidence, other than MR Welday's obvious disdain, that it was ever made in the first place.
  • Dennis Lennox and other accusers appeared to be AWOL from the proceedings; if they were there they were quiet and out of sight. They [apparently] prefer to limit their attacks to those they can coordinate with the Liberal press machine and far left organizations.
  • After being on the Agenda to give his report as Committeeman, Dave was removed, and then added back in.
  • Dave gave, as usual, a resounding speech, updating us on the RNC actions of the past year, and affirming, along with the RNC's Unanimous Pledge, to stand for the 5 key Principles of the Party.
1.     That our rights come from God - remember that the democrats tried to remove God from their national platform.
2.     That we remain committed to the sanctity of life - the democrats favor abortion, followed by infanticide if the child survives the abortion attempt.
3.     That we will not tolerate further infringement on the second amendment - the democrats want to take your guns away.
4.     That marriage is properly defined as being between one man and one woman - the democrats favor homosexual marriage.
5.     The value of legal immigration, but remain opposed to illegal immigration - the democrats favor amnesty.
As usual abundant applause throughout was followed by a standing ovation. The enthusiasm for Dave's presentation overshadowed that of any of the other speakers.

This is the second time a tiny group of the usual suspects have targeted Dave, and the second time they have FAILED in their efforts to smear Him. As Dave so often says "YOU KNOW YOU ARE OVER THE TARGET WHEN YOU ARE TAKING FLAK!"

While Dave would never ask for it himself, IMO there are a few within the GOP in Michigan who should consider an apology. If the GOP is really looking for unity, they can start by muzzling those who are coordinating with and inviting left wing journalists to smear party leaders."

In MY opinion, Dave Agema is a prophet, willing to take the slings and arrows of the left and members of his own party to speak the truth. He may be a bit blunt at times but what he is saying needs to be heard and I applaud his courage in saying it.

As an aside, how would you react if someone like Dave Agema said this:
"If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual sex [sodomy] within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery."

Sounds kinda far out, right wing, extreme, doesn't it? Well, Dave Agema didn't say it, Rick Santorum did - ten years ago. Guess what? A federal judge in Utah just decriminalized polygamy.

Before you take a position on Dave Agema, please get all the facts. Do some research. And, if you want to give Dave some tangible support sign on to this petition.

Dave Agema attacker, Dennis Lennox Had Defamation Suit , Accused of Calling A County Commisioner A Homosexual

Dennis Lennox

Dennis Lennox, supporter of former National Committeeman and potential National Committeeman Candidate Saul Anuzis, has accused current National Committeeman, Dave Agema, of being a bigot because Dave stood up and professed his religious beliefs and the Republican Platform of traditional marriage between a man and a woman.

Turns out Dennis Lennox, has had his own troubles.  In a story dated July 22,, 2009 in Central Michigan Life, the reported that Dennis Lennox was in a defamation suit as the suit papers stated that Ingham County Commissioner Mark Grebner was accusing Lennox of calling him a homosexual.  Below is the story from Central Michigan Life.com:

Dennis Lennox named in defamation lawsuitDennis Lennox II, a Topinabee senior and Cheboygan County drain commissioner, has been named in a complaint filed by Ingham County Commissioner Mark Grebner.
The complaint, filed May 13, states Lennox published a defamatory statement by editing Grebner’s online Wikipedia page in Oct. 2008 to say that he was a “homosexual.”
Lennox allegedly wrote “Mark Grebner (born 1952) is a homosexual American politician and political consultant born in the state of Michigan.”
Lennox said he had not been served.
“There is no lawsuit,” he said.
An Ingham County Circuit Court Clerk also said that Lennox had not been served.
Two Michigan State University students, junior Bradly Michael Dennis and sophomore Anthony Michael Giammerinaro were also named in the complaint for editing Grebner’s Wikipedia page.
The multiple edits accused Grebner of being convicted with child molestation, named Osama bin Laden as a supporter of Grebner’s 2004 campaign and changed Grenber’s Wikipedia photo to an oil painting of Benjamin Franklin. The editors were traced to the students using IP addresses.
Grebner would not comment at the request of his lawyer.
Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings said Lennox would not be affected as drain commissioner even if there were a lawsuit.
“Elected official, given what they are, are subjected to all kinds of lawsuits. Some are valid and some are frivolous,” he said.
news@cm-life.com
According to Digital Media Law Project's website they write:
Ingham County Commissioner and Michigan political consultant Mark Grebner filed a defamation lawsuit in Michigan state court against three conservative activists for allegedly inserting false and defamatory information into his biographic
Mark Grebner
al Wikipedia entry.
The defendants were three university students active in Republican politics: Dennis Lennox, Bradley Dennis, and Anthony Giammarinaro.  According to the Michigan Messenger, the allegedly defamatory edits accused Grebner of being a homosexual and of having been convicted of sexually abusing children. One defendant also allegedly inserted a picture of Osama bin Laden into the entry with the caption “One of Grebner’s biggest supporters in the 2004 election.”  Wikipedia removed the edits in question.

After discovery, the case was referred to mediation where the claims against all three defendants were resolved. According to the docket, the complaint against Dennis was dismissed without prejudice and without costs on March 19, 2010. Ultimately, the trial court entered a stipulation and order for entry of judgment regarding the remaining claims against Lennox and Giammarianaro on Feb, 25, 2011 when, according to a report on a local political blog, Lennox agreed to pay Grebner $1,500.
The case was closed on March 11, 2011.

A&E suspends Duck Dynasty's Phil Robertson for agreeing with the Bible

"Duck Dynasty" patriarch Phil Robertson is off the hit A&E reality series indefinitely after disparaging gays as sinners akin to adulterers and swindlers, the network said.
A&E announced Wednesday what it called a "hiatus" for Robertson, 67, after he disparaged gays in the January edition of GQ magazine. He also said that, growing up in Louisiana before the Civil Rights movement, he never saw mistreatment of blacks.
In a statement, A&E said it was extremely disappointed to see Robertson's anti-gay remarks, which it said were based on his personal beliefs and do not reflect those of A&E Networks or the show. A&E called itself a supporter of the lesbian and gay community.
Robertson and his extended family became wealthy manufacturing duck calls and were turned into TV and pop culture stars by "Duck Dynasty," which has set cable ratings records for a non-fiction series. Several family members appeared in this year's Macy's Thanksgiving parade.
In his GQ interview, Robertson was asked his definition of sinful behavior.
"Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there," such as bestiality, he said.
"Don't be deceived," he was quoted in GQ. "Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers - they won't inherit the kingdom of God. Don't deceive yourself. It's not right."
Robertson and his family had no comment on his hiatus, A&E said on their behalf. He may be in some already taped scenes when the show returns Jan. 15 for its fifth season, a network spokesman said.
Robertson did respond after criticism of his GQ remarks.
"I myself am a product of the '60s" who indulged in sex and drugs until hitting bottom and accepting Jesus as his savior, he said in a statement. Although his mission is to teach people that men and women are meant to be together, Robertson said he "would never treat anyone with disrespect" because they are different.
In the interview, he also said that in his Louisiana youth he picked cotton with African-Americans and never saw "the mistreatment of any black person. Not once."
"We're going across the field.... They're singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, 'I tell you what: These doggone white people' - not a word!" Robertson told CQ.
A&E said it had received no complaints about those remarks.

Surprise You've got to read the fine print Medicaid may not be an insurance program: it is a loan.

Since ObamaCare is driving premiums and deductibles up, more people are being thrust into Medicaid and they're shocked to find out that - after they die - their states can come after the assets they'd been planning to leave to their children.
This week, the Seattle Times told the story of Sofia Prins and Gary Balhorn, a Washington couple who had to dodge a bullet they found in ObamaCare's Medicaid fine print.
As fine print is wont to do, it had buried itself in a long form — Balhorn’s application for free health insurance through the expanded state Medicaid program. As the paperwork lay on the dining-room table in Port Townsend, Prins began reading.
She was shocked: If you’re 55 or over, Medicaid can come back after you’re dead and bill your estate for ordinary health-care expenses.
The way Prins saw it, that meant health insurance via Medicaid is hardly “free” for Washington residents 55 or older. It’s a loan, one whose payback requirements aren’t well advertised. And it penalizes people who, despite having a low income, have managed to keep a home or some savings they hope to pass to heirs, Prins said.
What this means is that, if you earn enough to qualify for a government-subsidized plan, the feds will help you pay for your coverage.  However, if you're income doesn't qualify, but you own a house and have some money in the bank, you're on your own.  You'll have to leverage those assets against a sneaky loan for the full amount of your care from age 55 on.
As for Sofia Prins and Gary Balhorn, they were actually forced to marry in order to bump their combined income up to the level that qualifies for a subsidy.
Prins, an artist, and Balhorn, a retired fisherman-turned-tango instructor, separately qualified for health insurance through Medicaid based on their sole incomes.
But if they were married, they calculated, they could “just squeak by” with enough income to qualify for a subsidized health plan — and avoid any encumbrance on the home they hope to leave to Prins’ two sons.
“We’re happy to be getting married,” Prins said last week. “Unfortunately not everyone has such an elegant solution to the problem.”
Considering that liberals spent the last decade screaming about "evil banks" offering "predatory loans," it's amazing that their favorite President has just implemented a healthcare scheme that buries an expansion of estate recovery in its fine print.
OK, fine. It's not amazing. It's par for the course.
What is amazing is that even the far left loons at the Daily Kos recognize that this is a huge problem:
Those who enroll in Medicaid through the ACA Medicaid Expansion will find that there is no limit on the assets they can have, as long as their income is low enough to qualify.
Unfortunately, there is also no limit to the amount that can be billed against the Medicaid recipient's assets by the state. And Estate Recovery seeks a 100% payback of whatever each state determines are expenses they want to recover for. In other words, if you are 55-64, and depending on what state you are in and what services you use, Medicaid may not be an insurance program: it is a loan.
While it seems a lot of people are under the impression that Estate Recovery is only for long term care, this is not the case in many states.

The Unfair Attack On Dave Agema By The Left and Left Republicans

Dave Agema has come under unfair attacks because of his beliefs on marriage, which are the beliefs that most Christians share.   Read on as I will show you how Dave Agema's critic's are the bigots themselves.
Dave Agema
National Committeeman Michigan

Following are Dave Agema's words, verbatim, regarding homosexual marriage on two occasions in his speech Thursday during the Berrien County Republican Party Holiday Reception:

"I also put a bill in that was, quote unquote, controversial, but it's not. And I brought that up to your 6th District meeting here a while ago. This is the GOP platform nationally. We don't have a platform in the state of Michigan. We should have. We should adopt this. It would stop the bickering and bring us some unity.
"Because on this, it talks about some of the issues that I took a lot of flak for pushing. And one of them is I stand for traditional marriage, not homosexual ones. (audience applause) ... the basic unit of government in society.
"When you tear the family apart, you tear the country apart. I worked with these individuals for almost 30 years with American (Airlines). I know what they do. I know what happened to American Airlines when San Francisco said we could not land in San Francisco and do business with American Airlines unless we paid same sex unmarried benefits.
"The pilots said, 'Bologna. Don't go there anymore.'
"Can't do it. Too big a market. Can't do it. Well, what happened? Say me and, what's your name again, first name? Martha. I'm a flight attendant. You have AIDS. You come to me and say, 'hey, tell them I'm your lover for the last six months.' You get on our health care. American Airlines spends $400,000 before you die of AIDS. And he goes on to the next, and the next, and that's what was happening.

"Folks, they want free medical because they're dying between 38 and 44 years old. It's a biggie. So, to me it's a moral issue. It's a Biblical issue. Traditional marriage is where it should be and that is in our platform, so people that are opposed on that issue within our party are wrong. It's in our platform. (audience applause)"
He then went on to tell the story about how he got the position as a Republican National Committeeman for Michigan.
"We passed a lot of resolutions. When I put the resolution in called Core Values, I took flak within our own party because of the traditional marriage and the homosexual marriage within our party. It's in our book, folks. I not only took flak in Michigan, I took flak throughout the United States. Because they are very organized. I took flak from England. I took flak from Germany. I took flak from the Netherlands.
"I also got a lot of great letters. Telling me to stand, Dave, just stand. OK, I will. I've been working with these people for 30 years. I understand. I will not fold on that issue. So, I went back to my meeting and I got this resolution passed 100 percent through committee and 100 percent through all 168 members."

So Dave Agema is being criticized for his Christian views on marriage? What happened to our Constitutional First Amendment right here in America regarding Freedom of Speech and Freedom of  Religion?  By attacking Dave Agema, are not his and our religious rights being attacked?

For further insight here is what the Bible says on homosexuality / gay marriage:

The Bible consistently tells us that homosexual activity is a sin  (Genesis 19:1-13; Leviticus 18:2220:13Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9). Romans 1:26-27 teaches specifically that homosexuality is a result of denying and disobeying God. When people continue in sin and unbelief, God “gives them over” to even more wicked and depraved sin in order to show them the futility and hopelessness of life apart from God.
1 Corinthians 6:9 proclaims that homosexual “offenders” will not inherit the kingdom of God.
God does not create a person with homosexual desires. The Bible tells us that people become homosexuals because of sin (Romans 1:24-27) and ultimately because of their own choice. A person may be born with a greater susceptibility to homosexuality, just as some people are born with a tendency to violence and other sins. That does not excuse the person’s choosing to sin by giving in to sinful desires. If a person is born with a greater susceptibility to anger/rage, does that make it right for him to give into those desires? Of course not! The same is true with homosexuality.
However, the Bible does not describe homosexuality as a “greater” sin than any other. All sin is offensive to God. Homosexuality is just one of the many things listed in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 that will keep a person from the kingdom of God. According to the Bible, God’s forgiveness is just as available to a homosexual as it is to an adulterer, idol worshipper, murderer, thief, etc. God also promises the strength for victory over sin, including homosexuality, to all those who will believe in Jesus Christ for their salvation (1 Corinthians 6:11; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Philippians 4:13).
There are many Christians on both the Republican and Democrat side that have these beliefs.  There was nothing bigoted in what Dave Agema said.  He spoke from personal experience and from his religious beliefs.

By these vicious attacks from the left and from Leftist Establishment Republican's aren't they being bigots themselves?  One newspaper columnist went so far as to call those with religious beliefs in the Republican party Neanderthals. (see the Macomb Daily article Politicaly Speaking by Chad Selweski 12-10-13)  Mr. Selweski's comments are nothing but a bigoted  in themselves.

Here are some lessons to take from this who political drama:

Mr. Agema was on to something with his statements, the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual,, Transvestite) community is one of the biggest donors in politics.  They have traditionally given to the Democrats and the Republican Party is changing its stance to tap into not only that vote but their money.

Although there is a scam that many are pulling to get medical benefits that is not the whole reason why Obamacare was passed.  The real reason that Obamacare has been passed is to take care of the illegal immigrants that will become legal once amnesty has been passed.  Right now many illegals avoid the hospital when ill as they avoid medical care in fear of being deported.  Once they no longer have that fear when amnesty is passed they will flood the hospital ER rooms draining hospital resources.  Obamacare was put in place to cover the ER costs.  Get it, Obamacare was put into place so that more people would pay into the system to cover those with out insurance.  The Congressional Budget Office has even admitted that 30 million will remain uninsured.

These vicious attacks on Dave Agema are nothing more than to silence a voice of someone in position of power that has the power to slowdown the leftist unconstitutional agenda of those in the Democrat and Republican Parties.

A petition has been created to send a message to the Michigan Republican Party that Dave Agema is supported and to censure him for enforcing the Republican platform is wrong! You can sign the petition here.
